How Can I Help

As you well know, running a team the size of Apple Valley’s and keeping our legacy thriving takes the help of everyone. There are any number of ways that you can help with the day-to-day aspects of the team, the MinneApple tournaments, as well as with the team competing at national level competitions. If you are interested in helping, please email Pam Wycoff at pam.wycoff@district196.org
Here are some ways to consider helping the team at specific times:
During the season (Anytime from September to June)
Judging at invitational tournaments
Each week throughout the season, we are always looking for judges. By donating your services, the team saves approximately $60.00 a tournament day per required judge. Just one day of judging speech or debate would help significantly.
Suits/Clothing
If you are cleaning out your closets and you have conservative suits, shells, shirts, ties etc., that could help members of the team look professional we’d appreciate putting them in storage.
Coaching
Undoubtedly, your coaches were dedicated individuals who gave of their time and expertise. You can help by working afterschool or evenings with some of our students to help them reach their potential. Even if you can’t commit to helping on a regular basis, there are opportunities to volunteer to listen to practice rounds or attend a mock tournament and critique speakers during the season.
MinneApple Tournament (Early November and Early February)
Volunteer at the tournament
Help with tournament setup, tabbing, coordination, hospitality or volunteer to judge.
Hospitality and Concessions Donations.
Basic donations of pop, bottled water, coffee, food, candy, fruit, and snacks for concessions and the coaches’ lounges would be appreciated. Paper products for serving food would also be helpful.
Develop corporate giving
Can you or your company donate goods that can help us run the tournament or the team? The tournament always needs sponsorship and donations from businesses to help us subsidize the tournament costs.
National Tournaments (May and June)
The most important traveling tournaments are our national competitions that include the Tournament of Champions (early May), the National Catholic Forensic League Tournament (late May), and the National Forensic League Tournament (mid June). These tournaments are often our largest expense because of travel, hotel rooms, and registration fees. You can help by donating to the team to help make the costs more manageable. Individual and corporate giving are great sources of income that make an incredible difference for individuals who struggle to afford the expense of national competition. Consider donating toward or sponsoring a student who cannot afford travel expenses.
Additional Ways to Help:
Ask your place of employment about corporate giving
Most businesses have corporate giving programs or fundraising options for the community. Some will match volunteer hours with a financial gift. Put us in touch with the right people or set it up yourself! Debaters and speakers are a great investment and an often neglected part of the community.
Donate supplies or equipment to the team
Each year, we spend thousands of dollars on supplies that you or your company might be willing to donate. Anything that you think a debater or speech student might use would be a great savings to the team. Examples might include: pens, file folders, extemp tubs, binders, posterboard, staplers, scissors, tape, videotapes, DVDs, Visual Aid Stands, Computers, Printers, Software, etc.
Donate to the Apple Valley Speech and Debate Booster Club
Your donation will be used to help students travel and compete throughout the season as well as purchase coaching supplies and other resources. All donations to the team are tax-deductible. We would also like to recognize you as part of our Alumni Legacy Program.
